Snowman Mug Rug

Mug mats are very popular and you can easily make one using an applique rectangle like this one.

Hoop a water-soluble fabric type stabilizer and run the first stitch - the placement stitch.

Remove the hoop from the machine and add a layer of felt or dense batting and the backing fabric on the back. Tape and pin it in place. Place the front fabric in the front of the hoop and put the hoop back on the machine.

Run the second stitch, the tackdown stitch, to tack everything in place.

Note: Leave the fabric and batting extend to the outermost placement stitch. Ideally, run the placement stitch again rather than the tack-down stitch. Most of the time, applique placement and tack-down stitches are identical. This was digitized to be appliqued to something rather than as a stand-alone applique. Because there is space between these two, the final satin stitching is a bit loose.

Run the final satin stitching and remove the water-soluble stabilizer. I also added a small applique heart to the design.

These stitch up fast and make a nice gift when combined with a mug.
