Pocket Applique Ornament Tutorial

Stitch up applique pockets for a cute Christmas project. It’s perfect for tree ornaments and especially for an Advent calendar: just add a chocolate kiss or sweet sentiment!

Check out these designs: Christmas Applique Pockets.

Choose from 22 designs. Stitch accents just as they are, or add an applique pocket. You can buy them individually or purchase the set AND, they are all on sale!

If you are new to applique or need a refresher, check out this video.

Start by cutting a piece of wool felt larger than what you will need. Spray the back with temporary spray adhesive or use an adhesive stabilizer in the hoop. Stitch out the first color, the placement stitch. That is for the face. Add your fabric and move on to the hat and scarf.

Next comes the pocket placement stitch. It will show where your pocket fabric goes. Take a piece of fabric and fold it in half, with the fold at the top. Place it over the pocket placement stitch. Put the hoop back on the machine and and the next stitch sequence tacks the pocket down.

You can see my pocket was actually a little bit too high. Remove the hoop from the machine and trim away the extra fabric.

Put the hoop back on the machine and finish the stitch out.

You can cut a square edge around the felt and attach a string to hang or stitch several on a wall hanging for an Advent calendar. Otherwise, you can trim around the embroidery leaving a quarter-inch of felt and attach a hanger.

Directions for the Christmas Applique Pockets designs may vary slightly, but the general idea is the same!
