Quilted Easter Eggs

Stitch up a basket of quilted eggs using the Scalloped Easter Egg design by Pat Williams.

Start off hooping a layer of water-soluble fabric-type stabilizer. Stitch a basting stitch. That shows where the batting and fabrics will go and how large the fabric pieces must be.

Use a temporary spray adhesive or glue stick to attach a layer of fleece batting to the front and back of the hooped stabilizer. Run the placement stitches for both halves of the egg to secure the batting to the stabilizer.

Add a layer of fabric to the back of the hoop, over the batting, covering all of the egg placement stitches. Secure in place with spray, glue stick or painter's tape. Position the first fabric (purple) on the lower half of the egg. Run the tack-down stitch.

Trim away excess fabric close to the stitch line on the front and back. Because the two applique tack-down stitches overlap (one straight line and one scalloped line), the back of the egg is quilted by them.

Add the egg's top half fabric and tack it in place. Trim the excess close to the stitch line.

Use the same thread in the bobbin as that with which you are stitching. Run the final satin stitching.

When embroidery is done, remove everything from the hoop and trim the extra stabilizer away. Use a wet rag to dissolve the rest of the stabilizer showing around the edges.

You can stitch up a bunch of these eggs and add them to wreaths and other Easter décor. Add names to the eggs and hang them on a garland or place them in a decorative basket and use them year after year!

So many great ideas, so little time!!

If there happened to be quilted baby blankets or other items, it would be great to have some of those precious scraps for a project like this.
