I finally finished the quilt. Good timing, too; the shower is Monday. This young lady and her husband have been praying for a child for years. The verse pane is from 1 Samuel 1:27, "For this child I prayed and the Lord has granted my petition for which I asked." I tried several tie stitches and wasn"t satisfied with any of them, so I settled for bar-tacks. As long as I"ve been doing quilts, I"ve never been able to actually machine quilt without getting puckers!!

Quilt in memory of Daddy

I completed this quilt during the year after my daddy"s death. He lived with us the last few weeks of his life so I had all his clothes. As you can see, he was pretty much a browns and blues kind of guy. I couldn"t believe how well everything matched. I cut out one of the laundry labels with his name on it and appliqued it on the back. It has a thick bat and flannel back...nice and cozy during the winter.

I keep my old Singer set up with the buttonhole attachment. It"s over 45 years old, but it still makes the prettiest buttonholes ever.

The closet still needs some work, right now it holds miscellaneous junk and all my patterns and stabilizers.

Linda,
Your quilt is beautiful and I am sure working on it became very bitter sweet for you. It was truly a labor of love.
I, too, did the same for my father's shirtings. I was unable to salvage much so my memory quilt is a wall hanging. It had to be a simple Civil War design due to the lack of enough fabric. I was determined to use only Dad's clothing including the backing. I succeeded. I also used laundry labels, manufacturing labels and also kept some shirt pockets, which will eventually hold some of Dad's photos.
Like you, I had blue and brown plaids as well. The good old 1950s and 1960s plaids!
Beautiful. You should be proud.

Oh WOW....what a WONDERFUL quilt!!!!
You did SUCH a GREAT job on it, and yes those blues and browns all did go together so nicely.
What a wonderful keepsake of your dad's clothing!!!
I didn't quite understand the 'laundry label' so if you have time please
tell more. Was that a common thing that I just never saw my dad or grandpa have? I think it's a really neat idea though!
Thanks so much for sharing....especially this Father's Day weekend!

Cathy,
My dad sent all his clothes, even work clothes, to the laundry, so they had his name printed in black ink on his shirt collars. Don't know if they all do that or not, but his did. Adding it just seemed to make it more "his".
It's sunny and hot here. Been hovering around 100 for a week now and dry as bones. A lot of farmers have lost their corn crops, even those with irrigation are struggling with the price of gas and oil so high. Our garden is doing well, but with the drought going on and on we don't know if the aquafier our well is on will hold out or not. And the poor people in Iowa are floating away.....makes you want to cry.

What a beautiful quilt. I was not activly sewing when my father passed, but my mother just passed in April and I did manage to get a couple of her clothing items. I am making memory bears from them.

OMGosh....I have tears in my eyes. My mom just passed away six weeks ago and I never thought about saving parts of her clothes for a quilt. Wish I had. Oh well, there was a reason for it so they say. Thanks for sharing....it is amazing

Any of us that have that old Singer would never part with it! I have one that I have had since 1959; my first machine made with money I made picking berries during the summer.

I have a Singer that my mom taught me to sew on when I was a teen. I love that old machine. I'm the only one in my family that sews so of course I got it when she passed on. Evertime I look at it I think of her telling me the bobbin thread should go over the top and toward my brother house which lived next door and still does since I inherited along with the Singer.
