I'd like to know if it is possible to turn a standard machine embroidery design into an applique. I've never sewn an applique before and I've been spending lots of time reading up on how they work.  In my machine (Pfaff 2124) there are some pre-loaded designs. The one I'm looking to use is a shield. I would like to use it as an applique.  I realize it won't stitch out an outline for me to match up a template to. Does anyone have any tips on how to make this non-applique design an applique?  Do I just sort of "guess" where to put the cut out material?

Editing software would be the only method that I know of.

Guessing may leave you with "whiskers" around the edges and sections that may not be caught in the final stitching.
