Let’s finish up our Sew Pretty zippered bag!
After adding the monogram to the front, it’s time to stitch
the lining.
Take the bottom front lining fabric and turn a half-inch of the top
to the wrong side and press. With the hoop on a flat surface, place the piece
folded side down, lining the folded edge along the zipper stitch line on the
BACK of the hoop. Replace the hoop on the machine and run the attachment
stitch.
Remove the hoop and place it on a flat surface. Fold the
bottom of the upper front fabric inside a half-inch and press.
Insert the batting
and place the folded edge along the upper zipper line. Secure with tape or
temporary adhesive and attach the hoop.
Run the attachment stitch and upper
stippling.
Remove the hoop again. This time, the bottom of the upper
lining is folded under and pressed. The folded edge gets placed along the top
edge of the zipper stitch line with the lining fabric right side up on the BACK
of the hoop. Put the hoop back on the machine and run the attachment stitch. Be
sure the lining edges do not get turned under when hooping (painter’s tape
works great for this).
This is the most important step of the project: On the front
of the hoop, unzip the zipper at least half way. If you don’t, the zipper won’t
work in the finished bag.
Because I didn’t attach a pocket or straps, I moved on to
the back. The outside back fabric is placed on top of the front, right sides
together. Place the back batting on top of that. Put the hoop back on the
machine and stitch the partial bottom seam. Tape down if necessary.
Remove the hoop from the machine. Place the back lining
fabric right side down on the BACK of the hoop. Secure with tape/adhesive.
Replace the hoop and run the stitching to attach.
Unhoop everything and trim a quarter-inch from the stitching
line.
