How much to charge for designs

i am trying to start my own business. i have an order for a quilt with several embroidery designs on it, but i don't have any idea how much to charge for the designs. can anyone, give me an idea on how much would be reasonable to charge for designs?

I work for a quilt embroidery shop, The rule of thumb is you have to charge a start up fee, you decide on how much, usually $50 to 85$ per design, this pays for any design that you may need to get even if you already have the designs or designs, Depending on how many stitches your design has, than you charge for just embroidering it out, usually between $5 to $8 per design.

Check your software program for print set-up. Usally there is a sample and pricing is done by the stitch count.

Example: total number of stitches @  your cost( you deside ) will equal the price. Take in to the account of your cost of total inches of thread and your time.

On the average, it's usually $1 per 1000 stitch.

I'm new to this also. What software program are you talking about?

It sounds like you have your act together!  I'd love to see your spreadsheet, as well.  I've been told  that in our area, size of hoop/number of hoopings is taken into consideration in charging.   I'd appreciate any tips you can share!

    Thanks,

    Lainie

I am just starting into the embroidery designs as well. I would love to have a look at your Excel spreadsheet if you would be willing to share. I am presently writing my business plan for Grade 12 business course, and that information is something I will need before I can finish it. How terrific it that!!

You can add me to the list of people who think you have a wonderful idea by using an Excel spreadsheet to calculate cost for an item.  I would also like a copy of it since we use Excel.  Since so many of us are interested, maybe Greg or Ann could set up a link so we could download it (assuming you're willing to share it)?

That's a great idea, Rita. There have been even more requests than you see here but we've had to delete some of them because e-mail addresses have been included in the posts, which we do not accept to protect our users from spam. Click here for a more detailed explanation of why we do not allow e-mail addresses in posts.

Pat, it is actually possible to post an attachment in the forums. For instructions on how to do it (as well as how to post your own free designs), see:

    http://www.annthegran.com/cs/forums/p/200/380.aspx#380

The link above tells you how to post free designs in the General Discussion forum, but the instructions work the same for all forums. If you could post your Excel sheet here in this thread, Pat, I'm sure you'd have some instant fans!

Thanks so much for sharing this, Pat.  I've downloaded it to my zip file.  Won't have a chance to look at it tonight since it's already 11:00, but hope to have time to "play" with it tomorrow.  Thanks again.
