  • Free Taskbar Calendar and Catalog Xpress Tip #3, Resize

This is absolutely my favorite computer clock and it includes a calendar!!!  I am not happy with a calendar that is on my desktop because it seems like it is always in the way.  In the Taskbar (lower right hand corner of most screens) is perfect because it shows me the day of the week, date and hour and minutes.  Download it here.

I can arrange the information anyway I like.  As a rule, I leave a program at its default settings.  There is a good reason for that – it is because if I make a lot of changes, then for any reason the software does not work, I can get a fresh copy from the Internet and use it immediately as is.  If it does not look right to me, and I have to figure out all the settings that I used 2 years ago, it is a headache for me.  I like to keep it simple – just like Diane Brown always shows us.  Her blog is one of the best I have ever seen for just that reason, she does not make my life complicated, she keeps it simple!

A left click gives this month’s calendar, but the right click is even more feature filled.

    TClockEx

    Select “TClockEx Properties…

Then select “Format Elements” for your specific view options.

As promised, here is the next episode of “Tips on Using Catalog Xpress.”

You can look at tips number 1 and 2 by selecting the links.

    1. Keep notes on issues (your input) - Notes

    2. Search by the usual information AND by Notes Search

    3. Resize designs

    4. Convert the format

    5. Recolor designs

    6. Categorize designs in multiple subjects (place a design of girl in garden watching a butterfly in multiple categories)

    7. Allow background colors (view your designs against project color)

    8. Arrange designs in multiple methods (Name, Type, Number of Stitches, Colors, Dimensions)

    9. Print the entire catalog of designs in 3D (as small or large as I like)

    10. Work with Alpha Xpress to create wonderful projects.

Resizing a design is one of the most often requested information in the Forum.   We find a design but it won’t fit on our specific project.

I will resize a bunny, and I do make note of several issues.

Notice that there are 15,180 stitches; 8 colors; and the size is 2.45 by 3.87.”  I will be making some notes (by selecting “Tools,” and “Design Notes”) about what I am doing, such as change information and the project I was working on for this resizing.

Keep the bunny selected, and press the “resize” button.

You can see the options available.  I am going to increase the size to 200% of the current size.  When I keep the “Preserve aspect ratio” button selected, it will make a larger replica of my design.

I select my format, and a specific new name (to help me remember what I did) and I am ready to do a “discovery” sew.

Notice that the new design has 44,243 stitches and the size is proportionate to the original at a 200% rate.  (I will skip the math.)

When I have done my ‘discovery’ sew on a similar fabric, I will see if the computer has done a good job of adjusting the stitching.

A few cautionary pieces of information:

    • A programmer has written this software to make the change.  They might have an idea of embroidery (or not. . . ) and adjusting the stitching, outlining and other issues of embroidery design can be tricky.
    • Not all resizing software will change the number of stitches.  Some may just adjust the spacing.
    • Never resize a resized design.  No matter who programmed the software, I promise it will go crazy!  (Been there, done that. . .)  For an additional change, start with the original design.  If you find that the 200% is too big, then return to the original to make adjustments.
    • Make sure you trust the software, and AnnTheGran was the original and oldest software for these types of adjustments.

If you are considering selling your embroidery, don't forget that I have a spreadsheet that will be your guide for determining how much to charge.  The proceeds go to Autism needs and research.

  • Great Photography and Catalog Xpress Tip #2, Search

If you enjoy good photography as much as I do, you will love this freebie.  National Geographic is one of the most outstanding photographic presenters of the world and I believe it will remain so for eternity.  Others may come and go, but some things are enduring.  Check this link:

You will want to read over the information about the collections available, and what you specifically would like to have for your desktop wallpaper.

There are also specific instructions for Windows XP and Windows 7, so you should have no problems with the download.  It takes a very short time to do it.

Now for my next Catalog Xpress Tip.  I see it in the Forum with some frequency, people don't always understand Catalog Xpress.  I want you to know your software if you already have it, and to understand the value that it represents if you are considering it.

What Catalog Xpress Does Not Do:

    • 1. Retain/Keep/Hold Data (Designs). They reside on your hard drive or whatever medium you use such as a Thumb Drive.
    • 2. Digitize

    What Catalog Xpress Does Do:

    • 1. Keep notes on issues (your input) - Instructions
    • 2. Search by the usual information AND by Notes
    • 3. Resize designs
    • 4. Convert the format
    • 5. Recolor designs
    • 6. Categorize designs in multiple subjects (place a design of girl in garden watching a butterfly in multiple categories)
    • 7. Allow background colors (view your designs against project color)
    • 8. Arrange designs in multiple methods (Name, Type, Number of Stitches, Colors, Dimensions)
    • 9. Print the entire catalog of designs in 3D (as small or large as I like)
    • 10. Work with Alpha Xpress to create wonderful projects.

My second tip is for the Search information.  This search is by far the best I have seen, and if you are making notes in your designs, you will see why.

Last time, (see link in item #1) I showed you how to put information in the notes for a design.  One issue with the design in question was that it is a little dense for light fabric, which is something that I sell on my site (see my profile if you want to look at my site).  My pashminas are light and lightly woven, making them difficult to embroider.  I have to nail it down with a nail gun, (Wink) and stabilize to get a good sew out.

Remembering that has always been a problem for me.  Which of the monograms are too dense?  Which work best?  Which would I steer my client away from because of density?

Let me offer some advice that I was given when I was the instructor of software - (teaching IS learning!) - when you are planning to have information for future use, consider using specific words for conformity.  For instance, I am adding the word "dense" for designs that have high density.  If a design has 'correct' density, I will say nothing.  If it is too light in density, I would use the word "sparse" to describe it.  Therefore, if I Search for Dense, I only get 'too dense' and not light ones.

Stabilizer, thread color changes, gift giving information are important items to keep track of and notes is your easy method for accomplishing it.

The same goes for specialty items.  An example is "boys" because you probably know that designs for boys are more difficult to find than for girls.  So, in my notes, I would make a design that is suitable for 'boys' with that word.  Perhaps I have a garden design that just might work for a boy, but it will be in the garden section.  I want to have the best use of my designs and this will help.  I could also put a copy of the design in the "boys" category as well.

Well, let's use the Search to find the word "Dense" which I have placed in two different notes.

    • Select/Hit "All," I call this task "the Missouri mule" because before your computer can help you, you gotta get its attention!!!  Use your mouse to select the Search Icon.

    • In the "Notes" box, type 'dense.'

    • See results.

Obviously, I have more than one design that is very dense, but only one which is a Monogram.

As you can see from the "Search" box, there are many ways to search.  I just think that the "Notes" search is an excellent way to keep all the information you have to keep track of during your embroidery.

To release the search feature, select "Clear" in the box and press OK.

Thanks Catalog Xpress for making my embroidery more clear for me.  When I learn something new, I will put it with the designs that apply to it and have that info at my fingertips.

  • Puzzles and Catalog Xpress Tip #1, Notes

I recently read somewhere that in order to keep our brain fresh and vibrant, it is important to exercise it the same way that we exercise our body.  That exercise includes doing the embroidery we all love, but it can also include games, puzzles, as well as the everyday issues we face.  Today’s blog includes all three!

First the fun stuff.  You may already be doing the newspaper syndicated puzzle called “Jumble.”  Jumble is where there are 4 words with letters mixed up, and with selected letters the fifth word makes a ‘humorous’ statement based on a cartoon.

That same Jumble is available on line.  The added benefits are that you can get hints, and in the end, you have an idea how fast or slow you completed the puzzle.

There are at:  http://jumble.com/games/info/13  There are a few ads, but the games are quick and usually easy.  Most of them won’t take you more than 2 or 3 minutes.  I find that when I am overwhelmed by the issue of the day (or hour), 2 or 3 minutes of distraction can be really helpful.

You can even do puzzles from the past.  That link is in the lower left corner.

There are multiple other games to play.  I have been doing the daily puzzle and Jumble Solitaire for a long time.  I tried the Jumble Crossword, and it was fun too.

I am in the process of rearranging my designs.  Catalog Xpress helps me control my designs.  As The Avid Embroiderer, I have mentioned that I buy my designs partly for the artistry and beauty of a design.  Therefore, my collection means more to me than just a group of designs.  Like a coin or stamp collector, I need a method to keep them organized.

On to the best features of Catalog Xpress that you have not yet used!  This is going to be a series, because there are so many of them, I cannot cover them in one or two blogs.  Here are just a few, and if there is something you want to know about Catalog Xpress,  please feel free to let me know via a response on this blog.  I want to help you get the “Best and Highest Use” from your Catalog Express Software.

    • Notes
    • Icons
    • Categories and Subcategories
    • Print Catalog
    • Backup
    • Resize

The first tip is to utilize the Notes feature.

Notes may be the single most under used feature in Catalog Xpress.

The example is a monogram and I always make my notes in the “A” character.  That practice helps me remember the individuality (see how polite I am today?) of each monogram.

On other designs, such as animals, I might put things like coloration issues or for whom I created that project/design.  There is much to say about designs, and remembering each is not needed.

One reason I need to be more organized and utilize the notes is that I do sell my embroidery.  If you are considering doing the same, check out my "PC Tips and Tricks" that has many general computer tips to make your work more efficient.   You may also be interested in my "How Much to Charge" information.  It shows you how to determine how to make your embroidery pay you correctly.

Thank you for reading my blog!

  • Free Fun Fonts For Family - Friends

The following tips can be used for both Windows XP and Vista.
Operating systems vary, if in doubt, check with your provider and/or technical support.

I like to be a little more individual than most; I change my colors of my embroidery at will, and I use many different fonts when I am able to do so.  I was looking for really interesting and innovative fonts, and of course, they needed to be free.

The other criterion for the fonts is that they need to be "True Type" fonts.  That "True Type" goes back a very long time in computer history.  Originally, around the beginning of the 1980's, Microsoft came up with the original WYSIWYG.  That was revolutionary, and it stands for "What you see is what you get."  Before that the written document and the printed document were quite different.  Eventually, all word processing and similar documents, including spreadsheets, databases and e-mails, adopted this font style.

One nice thing about (most of) these fonts is that an "M" is much wider than an "I" and the other letters follow suit.  This created a much nicer looking document and assisted in making the lines less jagged.  It even allows for ‘justification' to be considerably more appealing to the eye.

There are still some other types available, but they are those which may be individually "hand" created.  If we used all of those types, our document sizes would be huge.

    Use this URL: http://www.urbanfonts.com

Wander through the fun fonts.  You are sure to find something that will add interest to your documents.

    Free Fonts

I always thought Ransom Note was fun and challenging.  It will keep any reader guessing.  This photo shows an alphabetized listing of the available fonts.

    Free Fonts

Double click on the name and you will see the upper and lower case letters.

    Free Font

Click again and see more of the character set.  Make sure that you check to see that the ‘usual' characters are available.  Some don't come with the "pound," "plus" and some of the other signs.

Download and save to a place easy for you to remember.

To install, go to "Control Panel" (in the classic view) and select "Fonts."  Select "File" and press "Install new font."  Make sure you are in the area that you saved your font and it will come up on the screen.  Press "Install" and in a second or two, you have a new, fun font.

Just remember that not every application will support your new font.

  • A terrific freebie and a wonderful cost saver

I would read more if I could find the time. Since I have found “Books Should Be Free” I felt I could listen when I was embroidering or relaxing in the evenings.

This site has public domain audio in MP3 which is iTunes playable. You can take them with you or listen from your PC. Of course, iTunes is a free program from Apple. You can do a lot with iTunes, such as listen to free Podcasts, Movies and Books. Of course, there are also rentals and purchases of some of those items as well.

Speaking of saving money, if you have a membership any place in this world, you know that memberships do have their rewards. If you are a member of a discount club, you can go there to get 2 items and spend $100. (You probably know who that is - - I won't mention names, but the initials are Costco.) If you are a member of a fraternal order, you can enjoy the friendship of like-minded people.

Benefits for AnnTheGran site members are abundant, and significantly more are available for members of Ann's Club.  I am going to recap some of them because long time members can forget all the perks too.

The site membership is free and only takes a few moments. The site has clear and concise policies concerning your information. The policy states that your information will not be sold or rented to other groups. Read it if you feel that other sites have not been honorable with your information.

Becoming a site member allows one to join in interesting discussions and contribute thoughts as well as photos.

Registration is simple, quick, and easy. You may opt to receive the newsletter lets you know about sales, new items, and blogs to name just a few of the benefits. Naturally, you can opt out of the newsletter at any time.

And, despite registering, you still can be online, without signing in, thereby still being ‘anonymous' if you choose.

The membership in Ann's Club is 14 cents per day for 2 years, or 28 cents a day for 90 days.

Exclusive benefits for members of Ann's Club: (I am estimating what I save on these)

My savings for the past year

    1 Adhesive med tear away

    19.00

    1 Adhesive WSS

    20.00

    1 Textured Nylon Cut

    15.00

    5.00

    Composition Software

    30.00

    Annual Membership Fee

    59.99

    Net Savings

    61.26

(Does not including free designs, discounted designs, Phrase Pack, Digitizing Services)

Then I conducted a test. I selected 3 different stabilizers from AnnTheGran, totally at random. I went on the Net to find similar stabilizers, again selecting site at random. My results were quite interesting.  For one thing, everyone packages differently. So, I determined the actual cost per square yard and these are my results:

    Stabilizer Type/per square yard:

    AnnTheGran

    Others

    Medium Tear away

    1.741

      2.666

    Medium Tear away Adhesive

    4.909

    10.472

    Water Soluble

    3.709

    10.472

I found two sites that do have annual fees, one is $80 and the other is $65 (including 30% off stabilizers and some supplies). Both sites give you all the 'free designs' you want. Be sure what you are getting for your money, I would encourage you to check out The Avid Embroiderer's Blog (me) which touches on quality of designs.

If you are not a Club Member yet, give it a try.

  • Two More Really Terrific Free Software Programs

The following tips can be used for both Windows XP and Vista.
Operating systems vary, if in doubt, check with your provider and/or technical support.

I had a lot of difficulty with my Adobe Reader recently.  All things considered, it was a very bad situation and I wanted to drop kick the entire program out of my laptop.

After working with a technician at HP for too long, he suggested that I try "Foxit Reader."  After downloading this free software, all my issues disappeared.  I cannot say it enough, a problem that persisted for 6 weeks was gone and I was so elated.  And, to add joy to the situation, it is faster than Adobe!

Here is a portion of a review from the site and if you want to read the remainder, check the download site:

Reviewed by: Seth Rosenblatt on December 08, 2008

To put it gently, Adobe Reader is a real pain in the hindquarters. It's monstrously large, slow to load, and includes many features most users will hardly ever need. Foxit PDF Reader 3.0 kills the bloat and throws in some useful features, such as multimedia support and content-sharing options, while still allowing you to quickly access your PDFs.

Believe me, Adobe may have the lion's share of the Internet's pdf documentation, but that does not make it the best.

My second ‘find' is a really full featured photo editing software.  There are a number of good ones on the Net, but this one has several advantages, the best of which is that you DON'T DOWNLOAD IT AT ALL.

You use it on the Internet, so it does not add a zillion new files to your already overcrowded hard drive.

Techies have believed for some time that eventually no one will have software on the computers in the future.  There are several reasons for that:

    • Software has become more and more complex and ‘bloated' (where did I just hear that term?)
    • Software always has a quirk or two (just ask Microsoft. . . ) that have to be patched or repaired. Doing it on the Internet will benefit all users at once.
    • You will still "buy" the use of some software, you just won't have it on your pc.

There are other good reasons, so try to keep an open mind, because it is in the future - date unknown.

My new recommendation is Aviary.  The features of this program are so very lengthy, that even if you are not looking for a new photo program, you will want to look at what is available.  You may find something you cannot live without; maybe your software has it too, but you have not yet discovered it.

I am going to be doing some tutorials on this software for your use with embroidery in mind.  So, you have a project, but you cannot seem to get a good photo of it, I am going to (attempt) help you share your photos and/or projects.

Here is one thing that I will be teaching and working on:

    Addi and Cameron Diaz

Here is Cameron Diaz admiring my granddaughter Addi enjoying the very last kernel of corn.  Obviously, this is my first attempt and it leaves a lot to be desired, but there was a lot to understand and I am pleased with my first layer project.

Learn about layers and what they can do for your photo.  Learn about how to make your photo seem 3D.  I hope you will join me, because I cannot wait to make interesting photos.

For more ideas on how to take a great photo check these out: Party Tips and Tricks,  Composing a Photo and Resizing a Photo.

Check out the Catalog Xpress, the best design organization program on the market AND, it is 50% off.  Support where you learn.

These layered projects will be especially great for you who are Scrapbook Fans!

  • Post That Project Proudly

The following tips can be used for both Windows XP and Vista.
Operating systems vary, if in doubt, check with your provider and/or technical support.

If you ask me what I most enjoy about the AnnTheGran site, it would have to be the people on both sides of the computer who make up the community.  From the helpful support system and great items for sale to the Forum Users and bloggers who (she says modestly. . .) have clever things to share, the people on this site are really great!

We all have something in common; we get pleasure from doing really beautiful things and truly enjoy sharing those projects with others.  However, one thing that I see happening on the site is that people are uncertain as to how to upload their photos.  So this blog is going to be a step-by-step discussion as to how to accomplish that.

Some who might be potential project posters have been rejected because of issues with the photo before it even gets a chance to be posted.  This has caused some embroiderers to stop attempting to post.  If you cannot determine why it is being rejected, how can you fix it?

It has been my experience that the most common reason that a photo does not ‘make it on line,' regardless of the site, is that it is too large for posting on the Internet.   The following program, which is FREE (naturally) is easy to use and requires very little hard drive space.

Check out:  www.johnsadventures.com .  You will want to download the Image Converter which is at:  http://johnsadventures.com/software/imageconverter/  .  The Image converter needs just a couple of things to be really effective.  Tell John that Pat71896 sent you!  Consider a small donation because this is a really great program.  Additionally, he has a Background Switcher for your Desktop too.  You will love that program too.

After downloading Image Converter, place two files wherever you will be working on your photos.  I personally placed mine on the desktop.   I call them "Photos Before and Photos After," how clever is that?

When my photo software has completed the upload from my camera, the next thing that I do is copy them to ‘photos before.'

     Image Conversion

I utilize the software, and then set the new size to 432 by 324 pixels.  That gives you a photo that is 6" by 4.5" which is great for printing.

    Image Conversion

You still have your original photos in their original size, and the ‘after.'  Notice the large difference in the KB/MB.

This is what is meant by the size being too large, not the physical size of the photo.

Now that my photo is ready, let's discuss how to get them uploaded.

There are two places that you can upload photos, the Forums and the Galleries.   The functions are generally the same, but don't forget, you must be signed in as a member to do any upload.

In the Forum, you can either ‘Reply' to someone's post, or ‘Write a New Post' yourself.  In either event, you will be in the writing section to upload your photo.  Incidentally, you can also upload a small video or utube file in the same place.

    Madeira, upload, photos

    Now, select Insert Media.

     The Computerist

The remainder of the information is the same for both the Forum and Galleries uploads.

If your photo is already online, you can enter the URL here and Select Insert.  You would be done.  However, most of your photos are still on your pc.  Select Browse.

    Insert, Media,

Next, you will Select Upload File to get the photo from your pc.

    Select Content

Retrieve your photo from your pc, and Select Upload File.

     upload file

Select your file with a double click of your mouse and it will be placed in your posting.

    Select, Content, The Computerist

Your file is too large so, we will adjust it.

     The Computerist

Click on the photo to reveal the ‘Handles' and select a corner with your mouse.  Drag it down to a smaller, but still easily seen, size.

    The Computerist

    The Computerist

This is a photo from my The Avid Embroiderer, Jacobean Style which shows the details that Morango puts into its digitizing.  The detail was very important while keeping the photo a reasonable size. That is it!  Nothing more to do except make a statement about your beautiful project!

For uploading to the Galleries, Select the Gallery you want, either Embroidery or Scrapbooking.

    The Computerist

    Select a subcategory.

    The Computerist

And, after that, you will select the ‘Upload' icon.  Remember that you need to be ‘signed in' in order to see the ‘upload' icon.

    The Computerist

Fill in a descriptive name, and then use the icon "Specify File/URL."  By uploading from your PC, the photo will be available in your post.

Occasionally, some of the subtitles may not work.   You can try another subtitle, perhaps "General" rather than "Projects."

    The Computerist

It takes longer for you to read this information than it does to do it, so there is no excuse!  Get those photos of your best and worst projects.  We all learn from a well done and a disaster project.  Share your love for your craft.

And, don't forget to check out the terrific sales here at AnnTheGran, shop where you learn!

  • Nine of the Best Internet Sites - IMHO

The following tips can be used for both Windows XP and Vista.
Operating systems vary. If in doubt, check with your provider and/or technical support.

Here is my version of great Net information and money saving tips and tricks.  I love finding these, and get a lot of my links from highly trusted sources.  I hope you will find something in this group that you are really pleased with.  There are job opportunities and medical sites that you can really use.  I hope you like them!

If there is one thing on the Internet that gets my goat (where did that saying come from??), it is the "Work at Home" jobs that are a lot of nonsense.  There actually are some that are not phony, but how do you find those?  Well, check this site out:  www.flexjobs.com is a Better Business Bureau Accredited Member.

FlexJobs specializes in telecommuting or online positions, advertising more than 2,000 positions.  There is a fee, $14.95 per month or $49.95 per year with a money back guarantee!

Google Voice is a service that enhances the existing capabilities of your phone. You can access your voicemail online, read automatic transcriptions of your voicemail, create personalized greetings based on who is calling, make cheap international calls, and more using this free service.

There is so much to Google Voice that you just have to look at it to see it all.  Check it out at www.google.com/voice

Google is working hard at becoming the biggest and best destination for all your needs on the Internet.  This is just one of the things they have!

If you enjoy trying new products, this site may be just what you can benefit from. BZZAGENT creates a connection between consumers and brands to activate word of mouth across social and offline media. It allows for the producer of a product to get feedback, and possibly hidden benefits, from an unpaid, unscripted ethical user, you.

Give www.bzzagent.com.  The idea is to be able to get items for you to try, establish yourself as an advocate and have a little fun along the way.

Despite there being a zillion pages of information on the Net, I sometimes have a hard time finding exactly what I want.  Sometimes I get items that are of no interest to me.  For instance, I was trying to find "Paisley" (like the design).  This is what I got from my old standby, Google:

    • 1. the design and related information
    • 2. Internal Audit, Risk Management, Compliance and GRC Software (I have no idea what that meant!!)
    • 3. BRAD PAISLEY New Single "Water" Available Now.

If you have not tried www.bing.com  it is time to do so.  WOW, Brad Paisley did not come up until #7 and that Audit was nowhere to be found.  It really is cleaner and more usable than the others.

If you enjoy beautiful photos, you can make Bing your home page and every day you will see a different picture with interesting tidbits, just like this one:

    Bing in beautiful full color

The search results in your information and when you select the arrow to the right, it gives you the first few lines of your selection.

    The Avid Embroiderer Bing Selection

And last, and certainly not least, another of the many features of Bing is that you can 'earn' money with the "Cash Back" Program.  I don't buy a lot on the Net, but when I do, I will be watching for opportunities to 'cash back.'

Do you have CDs, DVDs and Games that you no longer want?  (Who doesn't?) These are movies, games and programs that you or your kids could not wait to get your hands on (remember?).  Well, they may have lost their luster to you, but someone else wants to get their hands on them.

Simply go to www.spun.com/sell.jsp where you will find the opportunity to sell your programs.  Some of the titles are worth $8.00 and up.  Regardless of the earnings, you are not taking that disk into the landfill, and there is benefit in that too.  Check it out, and see if you have titles that still have value.  (I get 10%!!! LOL)

When I found this site, I knew that I had found a treasure trove of money saving data like none other on the Net.  From the ‘Dollar Store' to ‘Savings Experiment:  How to Unclutter a Closet for Under $50' you are going to find ideas that you just may never have thought about.   (I love the selection of "10 Things *** won't tell you.")  That list includes drug companies, auto insurance companies and hospitals" to mention just a few.

Check out www.walletpop.com and reap the benefits of the preeminent sources of trusted information.  Walletpop does not write it, it selects the best of the best.  There is just about anything you can think of and it is at your fingertips.

It seems like all of us have an interest in saving money with our medical expenses.  I am someone who needs to save every dime.  This web site can find your prescription at the least expensive price.

Type the URL www.medtipster.com, and include your zip code.  You will get a list of nearby pharmacies that carry generic versions of your drug and show it shows the price as well.

If you are having symptoms that are puzzling you, you will find this next site to be quite helpful for you.  Enter your symptoms and you will get a list of probable causes and treatments.  There is no substitute for good medical treatment, but if your wrist feels a little sore, or you have a mild fever, you might want to check: www.symptoms.webMD.com/symptomchecker.

Naturally, you will want to check with your medical provider if your symptoms warrant more.  I would never fix my own broken arm, but I am always interested in saving money when possible.

It seems like finding things for kids to do can be a real challenge.  You may have an extensive library of CDs, DVDs and Videos, but those certainly get old after all while.  Keeping children interested in new things is one way that they learn.  Many of the videos or CDs are not just entertainment, and they are informative on various things.

I think that children enjoy videos and books over and over again because they are very comfortable with that which is familiar to them.  When it is time to expand their horizons, you can find something for them at this site.

Free and parent approved for kids at http://www.totlol.com/.  No surprises at this site.

BONUS TIP:  With vacations just around the corner, don't forget about my blog on finding the best Airline seat available.  Getting a cheaper flight and comfortable seat requires early reservations.

  • Two Great Freebies

The following tips can be used for both Windows XP and Vista.
Operating systems vary, if in doubt, check with your provider and/or technical support.

I hope by now everyone has read my blog on Rogue Software.   Protecting yourself and your family on the computer is really important.  No one wants to lose data or have other things go wrong, so do know the warning signs I have outlined in that blog.

I have given a number of links where you can find usable items; I use them myself, for three to six months, before making a recommendation.  Please be assured that those are taken from VERY reliable sources such as the Microsoft site, MajorGeeks and PC World among others.  I believe these have been on the Net for a sufficiently long time that they have too much to lose by being taken in by rogue software.  They are trustworthy.

About a year ago my old PC went to PC heaven.  A year before it departed this life, I worked with a technician at a place that has changed names again, and I have lost touch with them.  That is really sad for me because they were reasonable and reliable.  However, as the tech worked, I was watching him spend over 2 hours in a session in which they were (by my agreement) logged on to my PC.  Since they were not in Southern California, that just makes sense.

One thing that I did was watch them as they worked.  It was a lot like watching paint dry, but I saw something that was worth its weight in gold to me.  I saw that they used software called "Glary Utilities."  After they completed repairing my PC, I went to the Internet to see what Glary Utilities was all about.

To my delight, it was a FREE utility that does multiple actions.  Those include a Registration Check, Shortcut Links Review, Defrag and so many other things.  I encourage you to download this excellent utility and see what I am speaking about.  I have used it for a little over 2 years, and it keeps my PC running faster and I feel, more reliably.

If you check the Modules tab, you will find the individual items for you to use them singularly rather than the "1-Click Maintenance" shown above.

You will want to try the System Tools for the various things that may be helpful for you.

If you love what they do with those "mosaic" photos - the ones where you see multiple photos to create a single design, you are going to love AndreaMosaics!

This process is dependent upon multiple  factors.  However, don't be daunted by the information on the opening project page:

Your input is guided by this information, and if you look at the individual options, you will see that there is some logic for you to follow.  I am not going to go into the individual selections, you will want to play with the program to get whatever results you may want.

If you don't have a lot of photos of your own on your computer, you can even use photos from the Internet (watch for copyrights) and create something really fun and interesting.

These are two of the completed photos.  Each has been done with 2,000 photos and of course, tweaked to be interesting.

Try this FREE software.  Again, I get my information from reliable sources and use the programs for a time so that you need not fear having problems with them.

    Bonus Information:

I recently was reading from one of my sources that there was a study done at Wisconsin University on saving printing dollars for the computer usage.   Students were printing a very large number of pages, and the budget needed some relief.

The University switched from the Ariel Font to Century Gothic and found that they had a 30% savings after just 6 months.

If you find that your toner or Inkjet types of printing supplies are getting too expensive, try what they did - switch from the Ariel to the Century Gothic.  The font is is clear and crisp.  That is great for those of us who want to save money, and have a font that is easy to read.

Give that one a try.  It won't take but a moment to change your default.  Money is still worth saving, at least it was last week. . . . .   Wink

  • Internet Connection Slow?

This information may help you if you are using IE 7 or IE 8

The following tips can be used for both Windows XP and Vista.
Operating systems vary, if in doubt, check with your provider and/or technical support.

I don't know anyone who thinks that their Internet connection is as fast as they would like it to be.  Additionally, things may start to crawl for no apparent reason whatsoever.  Things do go wrong, and perhaps it is not your issue at all.  The following is information may be just what you need.

Three of the most common types of internet connection services are dial-up, DSL and cable.  Cable is the fastest with DSL in 2nd place and dial-up the slowest.  Some people have no choice because of service availability, so you have whatever you have.

Regardless of what type of service you are using, there are a few things that are certain.  The first is that, no matter what the number your service says you are getting, you are generally receiving around 80 to 90% of that number on a consistent basis.  You want to be sure that you are using the best/most affordable equipment you can.

If you are using dial-up, check your phone wiring.  If it is old, deteriorating or you hear crackling on your phone, your modem will be slowed by these conditions.

The dreaded spyware, virus and their friends can significantly affect the speed of your PC (Macs too!).  Add-on programs, memory, hard disk space and programs that are currently running are offenders too.  So, if you have 3 games, a word processor and fun screen saver going, you are not getting the speed you could.

How often do you scan for problems?  Once a week?  Once a month?  Frankly, if you are on the Net a lot, everyday is not too often.

Spyware, the very bane of our computers, slows your browser by monitoring your Net use and/or keystrokes.  If multiple spyware are present, you are having multiple slow down activities.  That spyware is trying to find ways to get you to purchase their sponsor's products and the data collected is used to entice you over and over again.  Big Brother may not be watching, but the Big Corporations are!

Propagation is often the objective of a virus.  Some of them can drain computer power and Net bandwidth as if they are a diva at a rock concert!  You will never see any apparent indication that they are running.  Use a reputable antivirus program, keep it updated and make sure that your Firewall is always enabled.

Occasionally, you may need to download a file that you know to be safe, but the firewall will reject.  It does not mean (but could mean) that the program is unsafe.  Firewalls are looking for a number of things, not the least of which is a document which has the extension of ".exe" which is a red flag for your program.  You can turn off your firewall for a few minutes, but be sure it is back in place once your download is completed.  Make no mistake; a firewall needs to be in place at all times.  You may have an antivirus program such as Norton or McAfee.  In this case, two firewalls are not better than one.  Two firewalls may cause conflict and one needs to be disabled in favor of the more powerful one.

Don't forget those toolbars that are so convenient, they could be slowing you down.  Make sure that you really need that game toolbar because it may be a real speed offender.  You can disable the add-ons for a session and determine if they are an issue.  Add-ons can be disabled temporarily or permanently.  Use the Tool icon on the Menu Bar and select (NEVER HIT - there is too much violence in the world already) Manage Add-ons to enable/disable items.

Every webpage you view is downloaded to memory.  It is saved to a temporary disk file.  Again, multiple, especially a large number of open webpages decreases your efficiency.  Remember that when you are doing a disk clean up, you have the option to delete temporary files from the Net.  You want to do that not just for the space, but many of the webpages you visit are dynamic which means they are constantly changing.  Therefore, the temp file is often obsolete anyway.

Popular websites will have delays, especially at peak periods.  If a website recently received some high volume exposure, like a TV spot, it can be a nightmare beyond your control.  Peak periods vary by your location.  For instance, when school lets out, usage increases.

When a new virus breaks out, it can slow down your Net connection.

If you are using a wireless network (Wi-Fi), you are subject to a number of issues including where the modem is located relative to the computer itself.  Frequencies of a cell phone can interfere with that connection as well.

These are just a few of the outside influences that change your speed.  It is not just something that can be changed by a wave of a wand.  Be patient, but if you feel there is something more to be done, you can do some of the following:

    • Contact your Internet Service Provider. Occasionally, they can reset your connection and it can be a big difference.
    • Make sure your Antivirus and Antispyware are up to date. Most of them have an ‘automatic' update link, and I recommend that you check to see that it is still checked.
    • Keep doing your Defrag and Disk Clean and remove the Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and any other items that are removable.

  • Photo Analysis

One of the most interesting, IMHO, studies of the human condition is body language.   Posed or casual, many of us can see the indications that are coming from the way a body presents or does not present itself.

Taking that one step further, if we really look at photographs, we can often observe information that may help us to understand how the people really are.

Let me start by saying that I own a well worn book that is titled "Photoanalysis" written by Dr. Robert U. Akeret.  The book is copyright 1973.  You can see a picture of the book.

I am not going to try to replicate all of what the fine Doctor had to say, but there were a few that really struck me as so obvious (well, only after it was pointed out to me) that anyone can see it.  Let's start with a politician.

Richard Nixon was probably one of the most vilified Presidents in history.  Relative to that observation, check out this photo of him.   Since it is copyright, I cannot print it here.  I would need permission from The New York Times.  While looking at this posed photo, place a paper or other straight edged ‘cover up' and cover the left (your right) side of his face.  I personally see a ‘Mona Lisa' style of smile in this photo you very well may see it differently.  Now, reverse that cover up and what do you see?  I won't comment here.  I hope that you can see for yourself.  Perhaps you can, at the bottom of this blog, comment on what you feel like you see on his right side.

The next photo is one that I use for one of my sites.  I had my actual photo (left) posted and did so-so in my response.  I must note that I (almost) never scare small children and do not need to hide in the basement when company comes a calling.  Then I changed it to the photo on the right which I purchased from a site on the Net.  Can you guess how that site did after the change?  Well, the number of hits nearly doubled. . . .  Did anyone really believe that was a blogger?

Moving right along, let's get more specific about photo analysis.  When you check out body language in photography, you can see interesting things..

You can see the happy expression of my granddaughter (6 at the time, now 13) as she is holding a dog from the local pet store that we walked that day.  She is leaning in to me and so very full of smiles because that dog is wiggling a lot!  It was a fun day.   One can nearly feel the fun in this photo, which was taken by a passerby.   BTW, I was fresh from Phoenix, hence, the really deep tan!

Here are my two grandsons, Luke and Matt.  They live in Chicago and these are 2 years apart.  They are on vacation in both photos.

The first photo tells a lot of the story.  It is apparent they are having a lot of fun; they are on a cruise; and they are very close, both in age and companionship.

In the next photo, it is totally unclear what is happening.  They are on vacation again, but what else can you see in the photo?   Without further information, you may feel like they are angry with each other or some other unpleasant event has occurred.

They live in Chicago, but actually are in New York on the subway.  I feel like they have watched too many NYPD criminal programs on TV, because they are really nervous and uncomfortable.  They did have a great time in NY, but at this moment, they were in fact very uneasy.

So, just looking at a photo does not tell the whole story unless you have a bit of information.

Suggestions given by Dr. Akeret for reading photos include (not an inclusive list):

    • Read the expressions on the faces, but be careful not to assume that, for instance, a pained expression is not necessarily a permanent situation. It could be the result of a recently stubbed toe.
    • See what is happening in the photo, are the people laughing, talking, dancing or otherwise being active, or are they posed? Posed photos can say a lot as well.
    • Is the background giving information?  Is that information correctly interpreted?  Is there symbolic information there?
    • Are the people touching?  How about their relationship to others in their group?  How are they relating to each other?
    • Read photos with an open mind and don't assume anything.  Look for reality.

Get your photos out and check out what you see.  If you want to show us your photo and your observations, you can go to the Forum, create a message.  While in the message, select the icon that looks like a strip of film.  Then select browse and follow the prompts to upload it that message.  Return here and let us know what your Forum title is so that we can see a photo that you have made observations upon, or one that you would like to have 'analysized' by the non-professionals at analysis here at AnnTheGran.  That could be a lot of fun!!!

Thanks for reading my blog.  I hope you have a comment about the photo of Richard Nixon.

  • Composing a Terrific Photograph with Matt and Frame Tips

With the new digital cameras on the market, photo taking can and does take on a new reality.  You can take 100 photos and discard 99 of them without the expense of processing.  That is only one of the benefits.  There are so many features, most of them universal, they are too numerous to mention.  With that, more of us feel comfortable with taking photos that really can be terrific.  Let's talk about a simple rule to move your competence up a significant level.

If you are a tic-tac-toe fan, you already have an idea of this rule. That is the ‘The Rule of Thirds' and its companion, ‘The Golden Mean.'  If you are around any photographers, they may not say ‘Rule of Thirds,' but they certainly abide by it.  Stay with me here, it will make sense. . . .

A tic-tac-toe grid is 2 horizontal and 2 vertical lines which are parallel and it represents ‘The Rule of Thirds.'  If you mark the crossing of the lines, you get ‘The Golden Mean.'

You need to have an eye toward seeing that first grid through your view finder.  I have a GE Model #E1235 which does have a grid available.  I select that through the Menu, so do check to see if your camera has this available.  What a great way to have the camera do most of the work for you.

Now, let's put the rule into use.  Let's say that you have a really good photo like this one:

I am sure you would be delighted to get one like this because it was most likely snapped with a ‘hope and a prayer.'  Let's see it in the grid.

This is as it was taken.  It is showing the two most important pieces of the photo, and in their own squares.  However, they are not near the ‘Golden Mean.'  Let me try cropping the photo to see if it can be improved.

Cropping has removed most of the lack luster portions.  It has included some spatial feel so we can see that the two items are most likely not on the same plane.

The sun is now nearly on the mark, and the parachute is still a little out of the ‘Mean.'  I would continue to work with this photo to make it more perfect.  But you need to observe that the parachutist is just about as near to the ‘Mean' as it can be given the original photo.  In the meantime, see how it might look as it were matted and framed.

I would be proud to present this to the parachutist as a gift they could treasure!

Last, but certainly not least, QUICK TIP:

When matting, the generally accepted method of selecting the matt color is to select the centermost color, which is orange in this case.  However, I selected the color of the setting sun.  Additionally, I selected the color of the mountains as the frame.  It almost looks professional doesn't it?

Best wishes to you and yours, Pat

  • Rogue Security Software

These tips can be used for Windows XP and Vista -

Operating systems vary, if in doubt, check with your provider and/or technical support.

Perhaps the term Rogue Security Software is new to you, it is a form of computer malware that deceives or misleads users into paying for the fake or simulated removal of malware.  This lucrative and illegal business is rapidly growing.

I have gleaned my information from both the Microsoft and Wikipedia Sites on the Net.  There is more detailed information available at both sites.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogue_software

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/antivirus/rogue.aspx

Rogue security software mainly relies on social engineering (Social engineering is the act of manipulating people into performing actions or divulging confidential information.) Think of it like a ‘con game' where someone tries to part you and your money.  However, it additionally can defeat the security system built into your computer and access a victim's computers.

Many have a Trojan horse to mislead you.  Some are disguised as:

    • A browser plug-in or extension (typically toolbar)
    • An image, screensaver or file attached to an e-mail message
    • A Multimedia codec required to play a certain video clip
    • A free online malware scanning service

The last one on my list is one that is particularly popular it:

    • 1. Tells you that you are ‘infected' with something that sounds or is real.
    • 2. Says that they will fix the problem and it is ‘free.'
    • 3. You must download their software.
    • 4. You must run their software.
    • 5. You get back a number that is astronomical - like 863 (or more) errors found. The number may be so high that it, if accurate, would render more computers unusable.
    • 6. You must pay for the software (one way to make their money).
    • 7. You may even see it run and correct the ‘errors.'
    • 8. Your machine may run as before or may even decline.

Once installed, the rogue security software may then attempt to entice the user into purchasing a service or additional software by:

    • Alerting the user with the fake or simulated detection of problems
    • Displaying an animation simulating a system crash and reboot.
    • Selectively disabling parts of the system to prevent the user from uninstalling them.
    • Some may prevent anti-malware programs from running.
    • Disable automatic system software updates
    • And even block access to websites of anti-malware vendors.
    • Installing actual malware onto the computer, then alerting the user after "detecting" them. This method is less common as the malware is likely to be detected by legitimate anti-malware programs.

Rogue security software might also appear in the list of search results when you are searching for trustworthy antispyware software.

Rogue security software might also attempt to spoof the Microsoft security update process. Here's an example of rogue security software that's disguised as a Microsoft alert but that doesn't come from Microsoft.

Example of a warning from a rogue security program known as AntivirusXP.

For more information about this threat, including analysis, prevention and recovery, see the Trojan:Win32/Antivirusxp entry in the Microsoft Malware Protection Center encyclopedia.

Another common rogue security program is FakeSecSen:

Example of a warning rogue security program known as Fake SecSen.

For more information about this threat, including analysis, prevention and recovery, see the Program:Win32/FakeSecSen entry in the Microsoft Malware Protection Center encyclopedia.

Here is the legitimate Microsoft Windows Security Center:

Screenshot of legitimate Microsoft Windows Security Center.

To help protect yourself from rogue security software:

    • Install a firewall and keep it turned on.
    • Use automatic updating to keep your operating system and software up to date.
    • Install antivirus and antispyware software such as Microsoft Security Essentials and keep it updated. For links to other antivirus programs that work with Microsoft, see Microsoft Help and Support List of Antivirus Vendors.
    • If your antivirus software does not include antispyware software, you should install a separate antispyware program such as Windows Defender and keep it updated. (Windows Defender is available as a free download for Windows XP and is included in Windows Vista.)
    • Use caution when you click links in e-mail or on social networking Web sites.
    • Use a standard user account instead of an administrator account.
    • Familiarize yourself with common phishing scams.

If you think you might have rogue security software on your computer:

Scan your computer. Use your antivirus software or do a free scan with Windows Live safety scanner. The safety scanner checks for and removes viruses, eliminates junk on your hard drive, and improves your PC's performance.

Check your accounts. If you think you might have entered sensitive information, such as credit card numbers or passwords into a pop-up window or at a rogue security software site, you should monitor your associated accounts. For additional information, see What to do if you're a victim of fraud.

Call PC Safety. Microsoft provides free virus and spyware removal support to Windows customers who think they have an infected computer or have other PC Security questions.

Customers should call 1-866-PC Safety for phone support which is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Customers can also visit http://safety.live.com/ for free online virus and spyware removal.

If you suspect that your computer is infected with rogue security software that is currently not detected with Microsoft security solutions, you can submit samples using the Microsoft Malware Protection Center submission form. For help with isolating undetected samples, call PC Safety.

In 2008, a hacker known as NeoN hacked into a database. Information revealed an affiliate earned $158,000 in a week.

These are a brief listing of the ones that sound so very real that anyone could be a client without knowing it:

    • Advanced Cleaner
    • Antivirus Pro 2010
    • Cleanator
    • Doctor Antivirus
    • MacSweeper
    • MS AntiSpyware 2009
    • PC Clean Pro
    • Personal Antivirus
    • PAL Spyware Remover
    • Security Toolbar 7.1 (Clever to say that 7.0 had been improved!!)
    • System Antivirus 2008
    • UltimateCleaner
    • TrustedAntivirus
    • TheSpyBot (Spybot - Search & Destroy knockoff)
    • WinDefender (not to be confused with the legitimate Windows Defender)

As previously noted, this is just a few of the many malware that is available.  I thought these names sounded so realistic.  You can see the larger list at the Wikipedia site.

As stated earlier in this blog, much of the information has been directly taken from Microsoft and/or Wikipedia.  I felt it was too important than to write my own version.  And, may I add, always purchase your software from a reliable source.  If in doubt, check your product vendor's site for more information.

  • Save Money When Printing (MAC is included).

These tips can be used for Windows XP and Vista and MAC-

Operating systems vary, if in doubt, check with your provider and/or technical support.

Several years ago, the 'powers that be' told us that we were going to become a paperless society.  I don't know about you, but I have more paperwork now than I did in the 1980s!  Combine that with the expensive ink for our printers and you have a situation that can be astonishingly pricey.

Manufacturers of printers are 'giving away' printers and getting the real profit from the ink.  In fact, my HP printer cartridges are designed to be single use (not refillable).  That alone guarantees I buy HP cartridges.  I am not a fan of 'bargain' ink cartridges unless I can have total faith that they are of high quality.

So, I do try to remember to use the settings on my printer to get the reasonable quality based on the requirements of the pages.  I recommend, and do, use the "Fast/Economical Print" feature for my printer.  I access that feature through the Print Dialog Box and then selecting Printing Shortcuts.

Here is an additional free program I think you will find helpful:

    Hewlett-Packard - Smart-Web-Printing

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3551212&lang=en&

Get support at the HP Web Printing Support Forum.

    Download for Windows XP:

    1. Click the Free Download button, choose Run.
    2. Follow the Screen instructions through the installation flow.
    3. Restart your web browser.
    4. Click the HP Smart Web Printing icon in the browser toolbar.

Download for Windows Vista and Windows 7:

    1. Click the Free Download button, choose Run.
    2. If a Security Warning appears, click Yes to install the GetDownloadManager plugin. A download window opens.
    3. The Download automatically starts and when the complete, the download window closes and an installation window opens.
    4. Follow the instructions contained in the installation window to finish.
    5. Restart your web browser.
    6. Click the HP Smart Web Printing icon in the browser toolbar (blue/green icon).

    Once downloaded and installed:

    1. Open "Clip Book"

    2.             Click the "Select" button

    3.             Left-click and drag over the desired area of the web page

    4.             To add to your document, choose “Clip” to combine and print multiple page clips at the same time.  When you have all your selections, simply select “Print.”

My printer is an HP, so I know that this works for me.  As I checked through the information, the program is based on your operating system, not the printer manufacturer.  If you experience a problem with a different printer, let me know.

Just in time for holiday fun, here are a few tips for getting some really great shots.  Let's start out with some basics:

    1. Start with a camera.  OK, that sounds a little sarcastic, but the fact is that the auxiliary phones, ipods, etc., just don't have a great deal of real depth to them.    Those are fine for times when you are on the go and see something that you want to capture, but for more important events, grab your camera.  I suppose that a 'camera' itself will one day be obsolete, but for now, I suggest a real camera.  BTW, I just read that only 'old timers' wear watches, the new generation checks time with their hand held electronic item.
    2. Check that battery condition.  That seems trite as well, but frankly, if you are using a camera with a cell battery, they get a lot of use from a camera.  I know that my first camera did not have a rechargeable battery and I needed 2 or 3 sets (often more) for a special event.  A low battery will take a really bad version of a photo.
    3. If you are looking at a new digital camera, make sure you get the manufacturer's rechargeable model.  That is an absolute in my book.  It is financially the best option and carrying your recharger will save the day a lot of times.  Before the big day, recharge that battery.  Don't think that because it has a lot of ‘bars' that it will be OK.  If you are on vacation, recharge nightly, you won't regret that!
    4. Start snapping early.  Don't laugh; I am not talking about Uncle Joe who dips into the eggnog too often.  I am talking about getting the event off to a great start by getting groups of people in a casual setting and relaxed.  If the party gets to being a real dud, you have the opportunity to show people photos to get them into a more fun mood.
    5. The early snapshots will be the 'posed' ones that are an obligation.  Later, as everyone starts to get a little more loosened up, you can capture the non-posed photos that are the best photos.  If you check the 'Society Pages,' you will see the more natural smiles in the non-posed items.  You might even see someone making an interesting face toward someone they like/dislike.  It can be very telling.
    6. Don't take photos of people that are unflattering.  There is no way to make these types better, bad behavior is just not complimentary.  Jackie Kennedy-Onassis smoked, but no one wanted to show her in that negative manner.  Choose to take the high road.  It is not interesting now and years from now it still won't be worthy of note.
    7. Along with item #6, say something nice to your subject just before you take a photo.  For instance, you might tell your sister that she looks particularly pretty today and she will have more of a gleam in her eye.  Capturing a look of appreciation is really becoming for anyone.
    8. Use candle lighting whenever possible.  It can be a warm glow for most of us - and you can adjust any darkening or shadows with your photo software after the event.
    9. Getting closer to your subject is almost always better. Use your optical zoom to fill the frame. When some people see the camera, they freeze.  Stand back and use the zoom and it can result in realistic and surprising wonderful candid photos.
    10. Use the "Automatic" setting whenever possible.  Taking time to manually adjust a camera can be a headache, and the cameras are very sophisticated these days.  You paid for that technology, let it do its job.
    11. If things are really 'lively,' use the 'sport' setting if available.  Children are likely to be racing around with total glee, those photos are precious.
    12. If you have 'video' on your camera, use it!  However, don't try to take 20 minutes of the party. You will exhaust your batteries and lots of people as they try to stay awake to watch your video.  Try for 1 and 2 minutes of interesting events.  Be selective of 'present opening' videos, not every one of those will be dynamic.
    13. If possible, take photos from the top of a staircase or from a child's eye view.  It really can make a big difference.  Take photos from different angles.  It is more slimming to take a photo from about half way between the front and side of a person.
    14. Take advantage of natural light, whether shooting outside or in your home.  But, be careful not to take a photo with a window as a background.  Your camera will seek the greatest light as its focusing point.  People can be darkened beyond recognition.
    15. Use your camera's red-eye pre-flash, if available.  It works best for those 'posed' shots.  However, this feature does not allow you to take a candid photo.
    16. When using the flash, make sure you are a minimum distance from your subject.  Flashes that are too close will wash out colors.
    17. Make sure you join the party too.  Being the designated photographer can be fun, but you are a party goer too.

Best wishes to you and yours for a happy holiday season, Pat
