A Sandy Hook Winter Time

While the media has died down regarding Sandy Hook Elementary School, my heart is still aching for all involved.  This type of pain cannot be dismissed or delayed.  It is present and will always be a sad memory.  Time will heal some of the feelings, but never the photos and thoughts.  I personally still think of those who will never fulfill their lives from the various incidents around the world.

I think of diplomas, weddings, births, and so many other things that won't happen.

We can treasure the time we did have with them and remember the smiles.

The Parent-Teachers Organization for Sandy Hook is planning for the return of the precious children with a 'Winter Wonder Land.'  It will be done with the things that are familiar to children world-wide for the winter time like snowflakes, snowmen and sleighs traveling through the woods in the chill of the winter day.

As embroiderers, I know that you will want to participate in your own way.  If you have not been able to think of something to do, I recommend that you consider doing something in embroidery.  A free standing lace (FSL) is the perfect item but I hope that you also dream up something interesting as well.

I have several FSL snowflakes, snowmen and sleighs but I want to do something more.

The above are not FSL, but I think that using something like felt cloth, a white tote bag, perhaps an apron for a service person to wear, attached to a canvas, foam sheets and anything you can imagine.

Please try to remember not to include holidays, Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanza or other things like angels.  This is a celebration of winter only.

Send your creation to:

Connecticut PTSA
60 Connolly Parkway
Building 12, Suite 103
Hamden, CT 06514

It needs to arrive before the opening of school on 1/12 but they also need to receive and prepare the area, so the sooner the better.

Embroiderers are the best of the best.

Thank you and I look forward to blogging in the New Year with great enthusiasm.

Note:  I believe that this date is an error.  Sandy Hook, as you may know, went back to school on 1/2/2013.

I did not get my work sent off and considered just what I needed to do with my winter items.  I have several ideas:

1.  Keep until next year and send in early to mid December.  IMHO, the first anniversary is in some ways, harder than any other commemoration of the event.  It is a time to reflect and realize that 1 year has passed and for me, that had been painful in the past.  It is as if life went on despite our sorrow.

2.  Donate it to a school in your area in memory of the Sandy Hook children.  Children everywhere must have felt the closeness of this violation.  While they may be resilient, each of us needs to see forward with hope.

3.  Using a shadow box, create a montage of winter joy just for having in the future.  It does not need to be in memory of anything.  It could be a celebration of the season.

4.  Donate your items to a hospital, retirement home, or any organization that would welcome some decor that brightens a day.

Embroidery is a way to show love in 3D.  Show yours.

Thank you so much for reading my blog.  Pat

Great ideas, Pat! I particularly like the shadow box montage idea and retirement/nursing home residents would certainly appreciate any of these designs.

It is commendable that, despite your sorrow, you have persevered and help others understand the healing powers of love.

I posted the original notice of Free Snowflakes for Sandy Hook 12/21 on the forum.

Hopefully, it was seen by visitors to ATG and they acted before Jan 1.

I love the idea of donating to other local hospitals and re-hab centers. My DH was in the hospital on Christmas day until 2 days after New Years and I loved all the decorations that people have donated. It made being there just a bit more cheerful.

This one did get a little confusing.  Still there are many places where these would be treasured.

CME - a few years ago I was in the hospital during the holidays.  I was in an accident and 18 days is long and I thought I would be OK on Christmas.

Please know, I really had a sadness on Christmas that was really unexpected.  I had visitors, but I was not home or with my family as normal.  Many people can use a little cheer, the holidays are one of the bigger ones.

I remember when my mother was in hospice, there were flowers and colorful items that made my visit more pleasant as well.

Embroiderers are the best!

Pat

I did a few before Christmas and from what I am told the school received enough snowflakes to fill a tractor trailer truck.  They are now in the process of giving them to other schools.

This has truely been an outpouring of love.

Let us pray nothing like this will never happen again.

Marge

I so agree with you Marge - Hold those we love closer and those for which we have concern, hold them as well.  Perhaps the young man just needed to be understood a little more.  We will never know.

I appreciate everyone's consideration for this activity.  Please do something nice for the school in your area.  You don't need children in the school to care about the laughter of children.
