Needle size is not so hard to understand, but thread???

Why is the larger number thinner instead of larger?

There is a long, long scientific "inspector gadget type" explanation for this, but the easiest method (IMO) is that the number indicates how many strands of thread it would take to fit through the eye of the needle.....not really. It is just a visual to help understand the higher number is the thinner thread!

It is the little things that help us maintain our sanity, or does it ??????
